Armenian-Georgian director Sergei Parajanov directed this visually striking, non-narrative biography of Sayat Nova, the 18th-century Armenian romantic poet known as the “King of Songs”. Rather than simply recount the details of the poet’s life, Parajanov attempts to distil Sayat Nova to his poetic essence through a series of surrealist montages bearing emotional truths steeped in the culture and iconography of the Armenian people within which Sayat Nova flourished.
