The Roots of Vancouver’s Gay Liberation Movement

December 15, 2016- 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Join the Centre for Socialist Education and the Young Communist League for an evening of learning and discussion on the Gay Libertation movement of the 1970’s. Learn how the movement started and what we can take away in today’s continued struggle.

Speaker Don Hann will discuss the Gay Alliance Towards Equity, formed in Vancouver in 1971. As well, he will showcase their pictures, newspapers and other agit-prop. GATE was involved in high profile legal battles, direct actions, pickets, human rights appeals and other types of struggles to fight for the rights of the LGBTQ commnity. Organizations like GATE sparked a movement that would inspire so many to get involved in not only the LGBTQ movement, but to fight all types of oppression. This history is not lost; rather it is celebrated and used to build our movements into the future.

This event takes place on unceeded Coast Salish territory, and we recognize that in acknowledging this, it reminds us that we must always be struggling to decolonize our work.

This event is a safe space for LGBTQIA2 folks, people of colour and women identified folks. Sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia and any other oppressive behaviours will not be tolerated.
