Tent City Volunteer Brigade
After 19 days, the ‘Tent City for Housing Justice’ at 58 West Hastings has reached over 70 tents and is going strong. The Tent City stands as a symbol of the housing crisis and the organized strength of the community in demanding that governments at all levels address this crisis, starting with the longtime demand of building 100% social housing at welfare and pension rates on the city-owned land at 58 W Hastings.
Over the coming days, Tent City is looking for volunteers to spend time at the site. Volunteers are there to support the residents of Tent City in keeping the site as safe and clean as possible; playing a supporting role in dealing with the police and fire department; and helping in collective response to emergencies (especially possible overdoses) by calling 911 and assisting harm reduction volunteers.
