Rally to Defend the Metrotown Demovictions Occupation!

July 12, 2016- 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

With the dawn of day three of our occupation, our political demands have not changed, but the character of our action has. What began as a protest coordinated with other housing actions has become a space of community resistance, growth, and survival. The tent we set up outside our occupation has become a community gathering place where neighbours come to get information about the demoviction status of the buildings where they live and share and compare stories. The building itself has already become a shelter for homeless people. Two homeless men washed up and slept in rooms of the occupied building during the day yesterday and today. And last night a third homeless man spent the night on the floor of one apartment. He was a previous resident of the occupied building, and couch surfed regularly with one of the residents demovicted last week. The City of Burnaby claims there are only about thirty homeless people on its streets and refuses money from the Province for a homeless shelter. Our occupation is creating space for the demovicted and displaced. Let’s protect it against threats from police and the city, and let’s keep up the demands to stop demovictions now!
